The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of spreading misinformation and political propaganda regarding the eligibility of Senator Iyabo Obasanjo to contest the Ogun Central Senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections.
The PDP’s House of Assembly candidate for Abeokuta South Constituency 2, Adeoye Adewale Adeniran (popularly known as A3), made the charge in a statement on Friday.
He dismissed reports claiming that a recent Supreme Court judgment automatically disqualified Obasanjo as “misleading, legally speculative and politically motivated.”
The controversy stems from the Supreme Court’s ruling on September 24, 2026, in a case between the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP).
The apex court upheld the validity of certain provisions of the Electoral Act 2026, specifically Sections 77(5), 77(6), 77(7) and 84(2) which deal with party membership registers and candidate nomination procedures.
It set aside an earlier Court of Appeal decision that had voided those sections.Adeniran stressed that the judgment did not name Senator Iyabo Obasanjo or issue any order barring her from the race.
“The attempt to present that judgment as an automatic disqualification of Senator Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo from the 2027 Ogun Central Senatorial election is factually unsupported, legally speculative and clearly designed to create confusion where none exists,” he said.
He argued it was “mischievous and intellectually dishonest” to turn a ruling on a dispute between INEC and another political party into a pronouncement against a candidate who was neither a party to the suit nor mentioned in it.
Adeniran challenged those circulating the claims to point to any specific paragraph in the judgment that references Obasanjo or invalidates her nomination by the PDP.
Obasanjo’s media aide, Dr Odun Agbalajobi, issued a similar clarification, noting that she resigned from the APC in May 2026 and returned to the PDP, where she was formally received and given the party’s Ogun Central senatorial ticket.
He maintained that the Supreme Court’s restoration of the Electoral Act provisions does not amount to a blanket disqualification of politicians who have switched parties.
Adeniran linked the narrative to what he described as growing APC anxiety over the PDP’s rising profile in Ogun State ahead of 2027.
He said the ruling party had turned to propaganda after realising it could no longer rely solely on political arguments.
He added that PDP candidates across the state, from the governorship down to the House of Assembly, are ready to offer voters a credible alternative focused on practical policies to address hardship under the current APC administration.
Senator Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, previously served as Ogun State Commissioner for Health (2003–2007) and represented Ogun Central in the Senate (2007–2011) on the PDP platform.
After a period abroad, she briefly joined the APC earlier in 2026 as a governorship aspirant before resigning over what she called unfair treatment and returning to the PDP.
