At least nine people, including a pastor, have been killed in a series of attacks by gunmen across Barkin Ladi, Riyom and neighbouring communities in Plateau State between Saturday night and Sunday morning.
Five of the victims were passengers travelling to Gana-Ropp in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area when they were ambushed on Saturday night.
Two others, including a pastor, were killed while on their way to church at Dorowa Babuje on Sunday morning.
The National President of the Mwaghavul Development Association, Bulus Dabit, confirmed that five people died in the Gana-Ropp attack.
He condemned the violence, saying the continued assaults were causing pain and fear among residents and must not be allowed to persist.
Dabit urged security operatives to pursue the perpetrators and bring them to justice.The Pyem Youth Leader in Gana-Ropp, Ukasha Garaba, also confirmed the incident, noting that the five victims were labourers travelling as passengers whose bodies were evacuated from the area.
In a separate incident at Dorowa Babuje, two people, including a pastor, were killed while heading to church.
A woman was also killed at Baten Wereng in Riyom Local Government Area on Saturday night, while another person died at Ratyidi in Fan District.
The spokesman for the Berom Youth Moulders, Rwang Tengwong, confirmed the attacks and strongly condemned them.
“We learnt that the pastor was going to church when he was attacked and killed. We condemn these attacks in the strongest terms,” he said. “The killing of innocent people must stop.”
Tengwong called on security agencies to strengthen their presence in the affected communities, investigate the incidents thoroughly and ensure the arrest and prosecution of those responsible.
Reports also indicated that several cattle were killed or stolen at Dorowa Maranba and the Kantoma axis around 3 a.m. on Sunday.
The Secretary of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria in Barkin Ladi, Gambo Abubakar, confirmed the cattle rustling and appealed to security agencies to investigate and restore calm.
Tension has risen in Kantoma and surrounding communities following the attacks. While the Plateau State Police Command spokesman had not responded to inquiries at the time of reporting, sources indicated that the Commissioner of Police, Ayodeji Faniyan, had deployed additional security operatives to the affected areas.
