Parents and community members of Mussa and Lassa in Askira/Uba LGA of Borno state have threatened to picket Aso Rock in Abuja if their abducted children are not rescued from Boko Haram captivity within six days.
The families issued the ultimatum on Monday during a protest
over what they described as government’s perceived inaction in securing the
release of the children.
Thirty-six students of Government Day Secondary School,
Lassa, who were abducted in June while writing the National Examinations
Council (NECO) test, are still being held by insurgents.
The students have now spent more than 130 days in captivity
after armed men raided the school and abducted dozens of candidates before
taking them to an unknown destination.
Ishaku Suya, chairman of the Borno pupils’ parents, who led
the protest, appealed to President Bola Tinubu to direct security agencies to
secure the release of the children.
“I’m making this loudest call to Mr President that we, the
parents of the abducted children of Mussa and Lassa, will take over the streets
of the presidential villa if he doesn’t rescue our children as he rescued the
Oyo children,” he said.
“You should either kill us, leave us alive, or rescue our
children.”
Josphin Yohanna, a parent, lamented what she described as
disparity in the government’s response to the abduction of schoolchildren in
different regions.
She said the rescue of abducted children in Oyo state showed
that the federal government had the operational capacity to act decisively.
“Why shouldn’t the president extend similar urgency to our
children in the north-east?,” she asked.
“We are equally Nigerians.”
Wadzani Hammatu, acting district head of Lassa, said some of
the victims are toddlers between the ages of one and three.
“We are pleading with the government to rescue our children
because the issue is becoming unbearable,” he said.
“Only God will help us, but the government should try.”
Ali Samaila Mamza, emir of Uba, said they had left
everything in the hands of God but appealed to the federal, Borno state and
local governments to intensify efforts to secure the safe return of the
children.
