A violent clash between personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and traders at Chorbe Market in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State on Thursday left one person fatally shot and several vehicles damaged.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident began when NSCDC operatives, invited by officials of the market traders’ association, attempted to enforce the weekly sanitation exercise by compelling roadside traders to close their shops.
Some traders resisted, insisting they were not members of the market association and should not be forced to comply.
“Our shops are along the road, not inside the market. We told them we are not part of their sanitation exercise, but they insisted we must close,” said trader Sani Musa.
Another trader, Grace John, alleged that the situation escalated when armed operatives began harassing traders.
“They came with guns and started threatening us. When some refused, they started shooting. One person was hit, and hoodlums smashed windscreens of parked vehicles,” she recounted.
Residents fled as panic spread to nearby areas including Apata, Alikazaure, Katako, Masalachi, and Bauchi Road, all known hotspots for clashes in Jos North.
A vehicle owner, Ibrahim Yusuf, lamented the destruction: “I just parked my car to buy something. Before I came back, they had smashed the windscreen. Who will pay for this now?”
The injured trader was rushed to a nearby hospital, while attempts to reach Plateau State Police Command spokesman Alfred Alabo were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
