The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has refuted reports circulating on social media alleging that Nigeria’s National Identification Number (NIN) database has been compromised.
In a statement issued by its Head of Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke, and posted on the Commission’s X handle, NIMC described the claims as “false and unfounded,” noting that the video being shared is a recycled report from 2024 that had already been disclaimed.
“The National Identity Database has not been breached or compromised at any point,” the Commission stated, stressing that it operates a “robust, multi-layered security infrastructure” to safeguard citizens’ data in line with international best practices.
NIMC expressed concern that such unverified reports could mislead the public and cause unnecessary panic, urging Nigerians to rely only on official communication channels for information about the National Identity Management System.
The Commission also highlighted its newly launched NIN Authentication (NINAuth) service, which provides secure web, API, and mobile verification tools.
According to NIMC, NINAuth requires explicit consent from NIN holders before their data is shared for Know Your Customer (KYC) or other verification purposes, thereby enhancing privacy and security.
“With NINAuth, individuals can securely verify their identity for services such as SIM registration, immigration, passport processing, tax filings, and financial transactions, without exposing their raw NIN or personal data,” the statement explained.
NIMC reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the identity information of Nigerians and legal residents, adding that it will continue collaborating with security agencies to strengthen its systems and counter misinformation.
