Okafor, who resides in Lynn, Massachusetts, was taken into custody on Wednesday and charged with voting as an alien. The U.S. Department of Justice announced the case in a statement released on September 16, 2026.

Okafor is expected to appear before a federal court in Boston. The charge carries a maximum penalty of one year in prison, one year of supervised release, and a $100,000 fine. She could also face deportation after any sentence is served.Assistant U.S. Attorney Julissa Walsh of the Major Crimes Unit is prosecuting the case.
