African Democratic Congress, ADC, chieftain, Dino Melaye, has alleged corruption in the running of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, NELFUND, and the Federal Government’s student loan scheme under President Bola Tinubu.
Melaye described NELFUND as a “haven of corruption” while
questioning the adequacy of the N20,000 monthly upkeep allowance provided to
student beneficiaries.
He also challenged the administration’s description of the
scheme as an initiative to pay students’ school fees, arguing that N20,000
could not reasonably cover annual tuition in government-owned tertiary
institutions.
“Which government school takes N20,000 as annual school
fees?” Melaye asked.
“Why is Tinubu claiming he’s paying students’ school fees
when he’s giving them only N20,000?”
Melaye’s remarks have added to the growing debate over the
implementation and impact of the student loan scheme, particularly whether the
financial support being provided is sufficient to ease the burden on students
and their families amid rising education-related costs.
