Deputy Spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Philip Agbese, has hailed recent military operations against insurgents and bandits, declaring that Nigeria’s Armed Forces have become “a nightmare to terrorists.”
Agbese, a Labour Party lawmaker from Benue State, said the neutralisation of terrorists, rescue of kidnapped victims, recovery of weapons, and arrests across the country show that troops are increasingly taking the fight to criminal groups rather than merely reacting to attacks.
Figures released by Defence Headquarters indicate that between July and August, troops neutralised 1,487 terrorists, rescued 777 victims, and arrested 354 suspects.
They also recovered 91 firearms, 1,331 rounds of ammunition, and 44 improvised explosive devices.
He commended Defence Minister Bello Matawalle, Chief of Defence Staff General Olufemi Oluyede, and Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu for their leadership, stressing that intelligence gathering, air strikes, ground offensives, and inter-agency coordination are now being deployed together to disrupt terrorist networks.
Agbese noted that the significance of the operations lies not only in the numbers but also in the disruption of terrorist logistics and command structures.
He praised troops for rescuing hundreds of civilians, many of them women and children, and highlighted the growing surrender of insurgents as a sign of weakening terrorist manpower.
While cautioning against complacency, he urged sustained investment in equipment, intelligence, logistics, and personnel welfare, as well as stronger cooperation among security agencies and communities. “We must sustain the momentum and deny terrorists the opportunity to regroup,” he said.
