The Labour Party (LP) has distanced itself from its former National Publicity Secretary, Abayomi Arabambi, following his legal action seeking access to the academic and service records of National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
In a statement issued Monday, LP’s current spokesperson, Ken Asogwa, clarified that Arabambi is no longer a member of the party.
He explained that Arabambi was among 25 members suspended by the National Executive Council in March 2026 for alleged anti-party activities, a decision later ratified at the party’s National Convention in April.
Asogwa stressed that Arabambi’s representation as an LP chieftain was “unauthorised and amounts to impersonation,” warning the public against associating his actions with the party.
He added that LP’s legal team is reviewing the matter and may petition law enforcement authorities.
Arabambi had filed three suits at the Federal High Court in Abuja against the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), and the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
He is seeking orders under the Freedom of Information Act to compel the institutions to release records relating to Obi’s certificates.
The NDC swiftly dismissed the suits, with its National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, affirming Obi’s “verifiable academic pedigree” and questioning Arabambi’s motives, especially since he admitted he was not challenging the authenticity of Obi’s credentials.
The case underscores ongoing political tensions ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with both parties keen to protect their reputations amid legal and public scrutiny.
