Rabiu Kwankwaso, Vice Presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has strongly condemned the blockade of Peter Obi’s convoy in Benue State, describing the incident as a grave threat to Nigeria’s democratic values.
In a statement posted on his official X account, Kwankwaso urged the Benue State Government to identify and prosecute those responsible for mobilizing protesters to obstruct Obi’s entry into Makurdi.
He stressed that the Constitution guarantees freedom of movement, a right that must be upheld for all citizens, especially opposition leaders.
“The alleged mobilisation of people to block Obi’s convoy is a dark day for our democracy,” Kwankwaso declared, warning that such actions undermine the sanctity of democratic freedoms.
He also called on President Bola Tinubu to caution governors against political intimidation.Kwankwaso appealed to the international community, including diplomatic missions and election observers, to take note of the incident and encourage Nigerian authorities to protect opposition figures.
Obi, who was en route to condole with victims of violence in Benue, was stopped after protesters barricaded Gboko Road near the Nigerian Air Force Base and Makurdi Airport.
Chanting “We don’t want Peter Obi,” the crowd disrupted traffic for hours.Speaking in a video shared by News Central Television, Obi condemned the blockade as unacceptable, accusing political actors of exploiting vulnerable youths for partisan ends.
