Two opposition parties, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), have announced they will not participate in Saturday’s bye-election for the Dawakin Kudu constituency seat in the Kano State House of Assembly.
The election, scheduled for September 19, 2026, will now feature six candidates from six parties: ADP, APP, APC, LP, PDP, and PRP, according to the final list released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
ADC cites leadership crisisADC’s Kano State chairman, Musa Shu’aibu Ungogo, explained that the party’s absence was due to an ongoing leadership tussle currently before the courts.
He noted that although candidates were prepared to contest, the dispute over control of the party made participation impossible.
Ungogo added that the party remains divided over its choice of candidate for the 2027 governorship election, with factions backing Ibrahim Khalil and Ibrahim Ali-Amin, popularly known as Ibrahim Little.
NDC focuses on 2027 electionsMeanwhile, NDC’s Kano State chairman, Hussain Isa Mairiga, said the party’s decision was strategic, aimed at conserving resources and focusing on the 2027 general elections.
He revealed that the decision was reached after consultations with party leader Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
“We discussed with the leader of the NDC, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and we decided that we would not participate in the election. We are only waiting for the general election, when we will take the Kano government from the APC,” Mairiga stated.
INEC assures readinessINEC confirmed that preparations for the bye-election are complete and urged voters, candidates, and parties to comply with electoral laws and maintain peace before, during, and after the poll.
