The Kaduna State Government has recovered more than 500,000 hectares of farmland previously controlled by bandits, allowing farmers to return to their fields after years of insecurity, according to the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Ahmed Maiyaki.
Maiyaki made the disclosure on Sunday at a gala night organised by the Kano Correspondents’ Chapel during its annual retreat in Kaduna.
He said improved security measures over the past three years had delivered tangible results across the state.
He recalled that bandits once dominated rural communities, imposing taxes, dictating farming activities, and even collecting dowries.
“It was so bad that farmers could not go to their farms. But today, with community-led security and early warning systems, peace has returned, and our farmers are back on the land,” he said.
The administration combined kinetic operations with non-kinetic strategies, empowering traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth groups, and other stakeholders to help combat insecurity.
Between 2023 and early 2026, authorities detected 75 potential threats and successfully addressed 70 of them, preventing communal or religious clashes.
Improved security has also boosted agricultural investment. The state’s budgetary allocation for the sector rose from ₦1.4 billion in 2023 to over ₦100 billion in 2026.
Free fertiliser distribution has helped raise maize yields from three bags per hectare to as many as 22 bags, Maiyaki said.
He added that the government’s focus on results is reducing food insecurity and restoring dignity to rural communities.
