Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has voiced worries about his personal safety in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections, stating he is unsure whether he will still be alive by then.
Speaking in an interview on Arise TV on Thursday, the former Anambra State governor said he has faced petitions and investigations in multiple places and remains uncertain about what may happen to him.
“As I speak to you, I have also been petitioned, I’ve been investigated everywhere. Like I said before, I’m not even sure whether I’ll still be alive at the end of this,” Obi said.
He added that he is relying on divine protection: “I’m praying to God for His protection because at this stage, I’m not sure what is happening.”
Obi appealed to politicians to foster a peaceful and democratic atmosphere ahead of the polls.
He specifically urged state governors to permit presidential candidates and other aspirants to campaign freely across the country. While governors have the right to support preferred candidates, he said, they should also create space for others to participate.
“Some of them will be campaigning for presidency tomorrow. They will be campaigning for other offices tomorrow. Let’s have peace,” he noted.
Reflecting on his own time as governor of Anambra State, Obi said he allowed politicians from opposing parties to campaign freely even when they backed his rivals.
