Mohammed Adamu, governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Nasarawa, says his administration will prioritise food security if elected governor.
In May, Adamu, a former inspector-general of police (IGP),
resigned his membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) after losing the
party’s governorship primary.
In August, the former IGP’s campaign organisation said he
would contest the state’s governorship election on the platform of SDP.
Speaking on Tuesday during an agricultural empowerment
programme in the Nasarawa north senatorial district, Adamu said the initiative
was aimed at supporting farmers with equipment and other resources to increase
agricultural production across the zone.
He said his administration would place agriculture and food
production at the centre of its development agenda.
“We must empower our farmers with the tools they need to
produce more. Food security will be a priority under my administration,” he
said.
According to him, providing farmers with appropriate
equipment would not only increase food production but also make agriculture
more attractive and reduce the physical burden associated with traditional
farming.
He said the initiative was designed to provide farmers with
inputs, including tractors and other agricultural equipment, to expand
cultivation and reduce reliance on manual farming.
Seven beneficiaries who were absent during the earlier
agricultural empowerment in Akwanga also received three-wheel motorcycles under
the programme.
