Adekanla Desalu, the Nigerian actor and filmmaker, has lamented that he was scammed after clicking a fake road safety link.
In a video shared on Instagram, the actor said he thought he
was making a payment of N2,500 but ended up losing $2,500 after clicking the
fraudulent link.
“From ₦2,500 to $2,500 God abeg,” he captioned the post.
Desalu also warned Nigerians to be careful when opening
links sent through text messages or emails.
“PSA please DO NOT click on any links you get via SMS or
Email without double/triple checking it is LEGIT. You can’t be too careful.”
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) had disowned a viral
message notifying motorists of road traffic violations and directing them to a
website to pay fines.
In a statement on Wednesday, the FRSC described the message
as fraudulent and warned members of the public against clicking on the link
attached to it.
The alert followed concerns raised by a social media user
over a text message he received notifying him of a road safety violation.
However, FRSC said the messages and the link identified as
“frscgov.top/ng” were fraudulent and designed to impersonate the corps.
The corps said its official website is “frsc.gov.ng” and
urged motorists to use only its authorised digital platforms and communication
channels.
Desalu was born in Lagos on November 7, 1980. He graduated
from the University of Lagos with a bachelor’s degree in actuarial science and
later obtained an MBA in artificial intelligence from Nexford University.
