For the third time, US reps vote to end Iran war

Members of the United States’ house of Representatives have voted to end the war in Iran, approving a war powers resolution that would stifle President Donald Trump’s ability to continue military action without congressional approval.

Tuesday’s vote was the third such action by the lawmakers. Previous efforts occurred in June and July.

The vote ended in a 220 to 204 tally, with seven Republicans breaking away from the president.

It is unclear whether the senate will toe a similar line, with the vote coming weeks before the November midterm elections, which will see Democrats attempting to wrest power from the vice grip of the Republicans in a bid to control congress.

Though the senate had also approved a war powers resolution to end the conflict, Republican senators quickly reversed course the next day, after Trump berated them during a closed-door lunch.

The White House had challenged June’s resolution, with the senate yet to take any action on July’s vote.

Trump had promised not to involve the US in foreign wars when he nicked a second term.

The president has defended the war in Iran, saying the conflict has degraded the Asian nation’s military capabilities
