The Federal Government is preparing to announce a new national minimum wage aimed at easing the economic pressures on Nigerian workers.
Dr. Kamil Shoretire, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, revealed this on Tuesday in Abuja during a capacity-building workshop for labour correspondents.
He noted that while a formal timetable for negotiations has yet to be released, preliminary discussions are already in progress
.“We are yet to announce the timetable for that, but background discussions are already ongoing,” Shoretire said.
“When it’s time to get the press involved in what has been proposed and what is being negotiated, it will be revealed to you.”
The permanent secretary added that the government is also engaging workers in sectors where outstanding salary and allowance disputes remain unresolved.
The development comes amid strong calls from organised labour for a review of the current ₦70,000 national minimum wage, which was approved in 2024.
Workers have demanded an increase to ₦500,000, an immediate wage award, and a reduction in the petrol price to ₦500 per litre.
