Youths from Ososo, Ojah, Ijiranmi, and other communities in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State staged a protest in Benin on Thursday over an eight-month power outage that has crippled businesses and stalled development.
The protesters, who carried placards, marched to the Edo State Electricity Regulatory Commission and the Ministry of Power, demanding urgent intervention.
Speaking during the protest, Bernard Gomina said residents had endured severe hardship due to the prolonged blackout despite repeated interventions by community leaders and Hon. Donald Okogbe, the lawmaker representing Akoko-Edo II Constituency.
Another protester, Abayomi, alleged that communities had contributed large sums of money to the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) for repairs, yet the problems persisted.
He also criticized the company for issuing “outrageous estimated bills” before the outage and called for an alternative provider if BEDC could not deliver reliable service.
Joining the protesters, Okogbe said frustration had reached breaking point and urged authorities to consider removing the affected communities from BEDC’s coverage.
He stressed that electricity was vital for economic growth and urged regulators to treat the matter as an emergency.
Responding, officials from the Edo State Electricity Regulatory Commission and the Ministry of Power assured the protesters that efforts were underway to restore supply.
The CEO of Edo SEBCO disclosed that technical teams were already on site and promised that electricity would return by Saturday.
