Residents of Burutu Local Government Area in Delta State have staged a dramatic protest against the council chairman, Mr. Julius Takeme, accusing him of failing to provide basic amenities despite huge budgetary allocations.
To press home their demands, the demonstrators seized the chairman’s official speedboat, vowing not to relent until urgent action is taken.
The protesters lamented the deplorable state of the council’s only government hospital, which they said lacks doctors, nurses, drugs, and potable water.
“People are dying daily in Burutu because we don’t have a functional hospital,” one resident declared.Beyond healthcare, the residents decried the absence of electricity and clean water at the council headquarters, insisting that villages within the LGA are better off than the administrative center.
“We have received billions, yet Burutu town has no light, no water, no hospital. Our villages are even better than the headquarters,” a demonstrator said, adding that they will not back down until the situation improves.
The protesters called on the Delta State Government to intervene swiftly to prevent further unrest. Attempts to reach the chairman’s office were unsuccessful, though an aide suggested he may be awaiting directives from Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.
