Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has lifted the indefinite suspension of Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads) Reuben Izeze and directed him to resume duties once 10 weeks have elapsed from the original suspension date.
The governor made the announcement on Tuesday during a swearing-in ceremony for the Auditor-General and governing council members of the University of Delta, Southern Delta University, and Dennis Osadebay University at Unity Hall in Government House, Asaba.
Oborevwori said Izeze had contacted him that morning seeking forgiveness and asking the governor to inform the public of his recent release from the correctional facility.
The governor noted that Izeze’s plea and willingness to confront the matter publicly influenced the decision.
“But because you have pleaded and really removed that shame and you came to face the public, even as people know that you are under suspension, from where you were suspended is not yet two months,” Oborevwori stated.
He added that Izeze could resume work after the 10-week mark from the day of suspension.
Izeze was suspended indefinitely on August 10 following allegations that he was linked to the assault of the governor’s Senior Special Assistant on Protocol, Simon Mudi (also known as Temple).
The incident reportedly occurred during an All Progressives Congress stakeholders’ meeting at the Petroleum Training Institute in Effurun.
At the time, the state government said the suspension would allow security agencies to investigate the claims without interference.
Before the suspension, Izeze had been arraigned at a Delta State High Court in Effurun and remanded for 14 days at the Nigerian Correctional Service facility in Okere, Warri.
The suspension had drawn appeals from various groups and political stakeholders urging the governor to reinstate him.
With the latest directive, Oborevwori has set a clear timeline for Izeze’s return while underscoring the need for discipline and proper conduct among public officials.
