The Falconets have been eliminated from the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup following a 1-0 loss to Colombia in their quarter-final encounter on Sunday.
The match, played at the Stadion Miejski ŁKS in Łódź,
Poland, ended the Falconets’ quest for a third World Cup final appearance after
a hard-fought battle.
Valerin Loboa’s late goal crushed Nigeria in a match where
they were reduced to 10 players after Kafayat Mafisere was sent off in the 78th
minute.
The Falconets entered the quarter-final on the back of
consecutive victories, including a commanding 3-0 win against England in the
Round of 16. Meanwhile, Colombia arrived after defeating tournament hosts
Poland 1-0 in their previous knockout fixture.
Head coach Moses Aduku named an unchanged 3-4-3 system, led
by captain and goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma, alongside wingers Seimeyeha Janet
Akekoromowei and Tosin Rafiu. Carlos Paniagua’s Colombian side lined up in a
compact 5-4-1 formation, anchored by captain Juana Ortegon.
Both teams fought through a tactical stalemate in the
opening 45 minutes, with Nigeria creating several opportunities through the
flanks, but the South American defence held firm.
The victory sends Colombia into the semi-finals of the
competition, where they will face the winner of the quarter-final clash between
North Korea and Canada. Nigeria’s campaign in Poland comes to an end in the
last eight.
