The Federal Government has reaffirmed that deeper cooperation with China in the power sector will help deliver reliable electricity, renewable energy, and locally manufactured power equipment to Nigerians.
Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, made the remarks in Abuja on Wednesday night during a reception marking the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.
Tegbe highlighted that while Chinese investment has already supported major projects such as the Lekki Deep Seaport, railway modernisation, and the Zungeru Hydropower Station, future cooperation should also focus on building Nigeria’s technical capacity.
“As Minister of Power, I see particular promise in deeper cooperation on achieving reliable electricity, renewable energy, and manufacture of power equipment in Nigeria with our cooperation with China,” Tegbe said, stressing that investments must also train Nigerian engineers and strengthen local enterprises.
He noted that Nigeria and China’s relationship, established in 1971, was elevated to a comprehensive strategic partnership in 2024 under President Bola Tinubu and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, described the bilateral ties as being “in the fast lane,” citing a 35 per cent increase in trade in the first half of 2026 and an 81 per cent surge in Chinese imports from Nigeria.
He said China is ready to align its 15th Five-Year Plan with Nigeria’s Renewed Hope Agenda, covering industrialisation, digital development, and clean energy.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepening cooperation based on mutual respect and shared development, with Tegbe also restating Nigeria’s recognition of the one-China principle.
