The Charismatic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) has formally endorsed President Bola Tinubu for a second term in the 2027 presidential election.
Archbishop Leonard Bature Kawas, President-General of the conference, announced the decision on Wednesday during the group’s 2026 synod in Abuja.
A video of his remarks has circulated widely.Kawas said the endorsement followed the bishops’ assessment of Tinubu’s performance in office.
Despite the Muslim-Muslim ticket that carried Tinubu to power in 2023, the archbishop argued the president had avoided nepotism in appointments and demonstrated fairness across religious lines.
“He did not only appoint at the national level; he also supported the emergence of Christian governors to be the majority in Nigeria. He has stood with Christianity alongside his wife,” Kawas stated.
He further praised the ruling All Progressives Congress for installing a born-again Christian and gospel preacher as its national chairman.
The bishops pledged continued prayers and advocacy for Tinubu’s programmes, which they described as aimed at Nigeria’s liberation.
“We are here today to reassure him of our solid support; we are standing with him in prayers and advocacy… We stand with the president today, and as long as he’s willing to be our president and even come in 2027, we will still be standing with him.
On this, this house has endorsed him for the 2027 presidency,” Kawas declared.Kawas also noted that Tinubu had responded to the conference’s earlier call to engage U.S. President Donald Trump on Nigeria’s insecurity challenges.
He urged the federal government to involve more religious leaders, both Christian and Muslim in political appointments, arguing they should not be sidelined.
The synod was attended by Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume and Information Minister Mohammed Idris, among other officials.
