The Benue State Police Command has arrested 20 suspects for alleged involvement in kidnapping, armed banditry, robbery, and other criminal activities across the state.
Commissioner of Police, Cletus Nwadiogbu, paraded the suspects at the command headquarters in Makurdi, disclosing that the arrests followed a series of coordinated operations in different parts of Benue.
Recovered items included three AK-47 rifles, 33 rounds of ammunition, two motorcycles, a Toyota Corolla car, locally made firearms, and suspected criminal charms.
Nwadiogbu highlighted a major breakthrough in Logo Local Government Area, where three armed suspects were neutralised. Another suspect was killed during an August 26 operation around the Ayilamo axis, allegedly linked to bandits terrorising farmers and destroying crops.
He further revealed that police foiled an attempted armed robbery in Ayati village, Gwer-East, on August 9. Though the suspects escaped, officers recovered a locally fabricated revolver and live ammunition.
Investigations also uncovered a syndicate specialising in vehicle and motorcycle theft, with five suspects linked to the group. Detectives extended operations to Dan-Anacha in Taraba State, recovering two Bajaj motorcycles and the Toyota Corolla.
The commissioner warned against illegal possession and trafficking of firearms, stressing that Benue would not be allowed to become a safe haven for criminals. He urged residents to remain vigilant and provide reliable information to security agencies.
