Bello Mandiya, former Katsina south senator, dies at 62

Bello Mandiya, a former Katsina south senator, is dead.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Katsina state government said the former federal lawmaker died at age 62.

Dikko Radda, governor of Katsina, expressed shock over Mandiya’s death, describing it as a “great loss” to the state and the country.

Radda said Mandiya was a committed public servant whose contributions to the development of Katsina state and Nigeria would be remembered.

The governor condoled with Mandiya’s family, the people of Katsina south, his political associates and friends, as well as his colleagues in the ninth senate.

Mandiya served as chief of staff to Aminu Masari, former governor of Katsina, before he was elected to the senate in 2019 on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Former colleagues and associates have paid tribute to Mandiya, remembering him as a trusted confidant, peacemaker and dedicated lawmaker.

Ahmad Lawan, former senate president, described Mandiya as a “thoroughbred lawmaker” who brought diligence, intellect and a “deep sense of responsibility” to his duties as chairman of the senate committee on water resources.

Waziri Adio, founder of Agora Policy and former executive secretary of the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI), also expressed sadness over Mandiya’s demise, saying their friendship dated back to 1988.
