Bayelsa Electoral Body Halts Local Govt Election Preparations Amid Court Challenge

The Bayelsa State Independent Electoral Commission (BYSIEC) has temporarily suspended the entire process for the 2027 local government elections.

The commission also ordered all political parties to stop their primary elections for the council polls until a lawsuit filed by the Zenith Labour Party and Accord Party against it is resolved.

The decision was announced in a public notice released on Saturday and signed by BYSIEC’s Commissioner for Media and Publicity, Augustus Elliot, on behalf of the chairman.

According to the notice, the suspension follows legal action by the two parties challenging aspects of the electoral process.

BYSIEC stated that the process leading to the 2027 local government elections has been put on hold and directed parties to halt their primaries pending the outcome of the suit.

The commission urged political parties, stakeholders, and the public to take note of the development and comply with the directive.
