The All Progressives Congress (APC) and its candidate in the August 15 Osun State governorship election, Bola Oyebamiji, have formally withdrawn their petition challenging Governor Ademola Adeleke’s victory.
Counsel to the APC and Oyebamiji, Seyi Oyagbile, filed a motion dated September 8, 2026, before the Osun State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal in Osogbo, seeking permission to discontinue the case.
This move came just a day after the tribunal displayed notices of two petitions. The first, filed by Oyebamiji and the APC, listed Adeleke, the Accord Party, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as respondents.
The second petition, purportedly filed in the name of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), also listed Adeleke, Accord, and INEC as respondents.
Confirming the withdrawal, Oyagbile stated: “It is true. I have filed a notice to withdraw the petition.”
The decision aligns with an earlier stance by APC’s legal team in Osun, which had distanced itself from the petition.
Team leader Adekunle Adegoke explained that consultations with party leaders led to the conclusion not to challenge the election outcome, citing the need to reduce political tension and maintain peace in the state.
Meanwhile, the PDP has disowned the petition allegedly filed on its behalf. National Treasurer Diran Odeyemi insisted the party did not authorize any lawyer to represent it, describing those behind the filing as impostors.
He urged the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee to investigate the matter, warning against attempts to undermine the integrity of the legal system.
