The All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have filed separate petitions challenging the re-election of Ademola Adeleke as governor of Osun state.
The petitions were displayed on the notice board of the Osun
state governorship election petition tribunal secretariat in Osogbo on Monday,
formally commencing the legal process challenging the outcome of the August 15
governorship election.
The development followed confirmation by Pefe Belemore,
secretary of the tribunal, that petitions challenging the election had been
filed.
The APC’s petition, marked EPT/OS/GOV/01/2026, was filed by
Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, the party’s candidate in the election, against
Adeleke, Accord and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The PDP’s petition, marked EPT/OS/GOV/02/2026, was filed by
Adebayo Olugbenga Adedamola against Adeleke, INEC and Accord.
The display of the petitions is expected to pave the way for
service of the relevant processes on the parties and subsequent proceedings
before the tribunal.
Adeleke, candidate of the Accord Party, was declared the
winner after securing 511,067 votes in the August 15 election.
The filing of the APC petition comes days after Oyebamiji
said he had accepted the outcome of the election and congratulated Adeleke.
In a statement on August 29, Oyebamiji said he accepted the
election result while expressing concern over violence recorded during the
poll.
“While we accept the outcome of the election and
congratulate the winner, we cannot forget the painful incidents of violence and
the lives that were lost,” he said.
He also said his camp would continue to seek “justice and
fairness through lawful and constitutional means” where there were legitimate
concerns.
Adeleke had called on Oyebamiji and other candidates to put
aside their differences and support his administration after his re-election.
