Nigeria’s largest airline, Air Peace, has explained that recent delays and cancellations of flights at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, were caused by a shortage of Jet A1 aviation fuel and unfavorable weather conditions.
In a statement, the airline said the initial delays affected multiple carriers due to the unavailability of fuel.
Once supplies resumed, operations recommenced, but its Abuja–Maiduguri service was later cancelled because Visual Flight Rules (VFR) conditions made flying beyond sunset unsafe.
“The initial delays to our Abuja operations were occasioned by the unavailability of Jet A1 aviation fuel, which affected Air Peace and other airlines operating from the airport. Upon the availability of fuel, our affected flights commenced operations accordingly,” the airline noted.
Passengers were reportedly kept informed throughout the disruption, provided refreshments, and offered hotel accommodation after the cancellation, with arrangements made to operate the flight the following day.
Air Peace emphasized that the safety and wellbeing of passengers remain its top priority, adding that it regrets the inconvenience caused and appreciates customers’ patience.
The incident highlights ongoing challenges in Nigeria’s aviation sector, where fuel shortages and weather conditions continue to affect flight schedules.
