Kenneth Okonkwo, spokesperson for Atiku Abubakar’s presidential campaign, has said that an opposition coalition is the only viable path to defeating President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 election.
Speaking in an interview with Ibeju Upgrade Media, Okonkwo dismissed the chances of Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate Peter Obi winning against Tinubu if he contests without a broader alliance.
“Coalition is the only way out. You don’t come down with a man who has told you from the beginning that power is not taken à la carte; you fight for it, you grab it, you snatch it, you run away with it,” Okonkwo said, referencing Tinubu’s political style.
He argued that Obi would struggle to secure northern support, adding: “If Peter Obi goes against Tinubu alone, Tinubu will eat him like biscuits. Will Kano people accept Peter Obi? In 2023, they did not accept him. In 2027, they will not accept him.”
Okonkwo also dismissed the influence of former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, saying: “Kwankwaso has nothing to contribute to the ticket. Even in Kano, Kwankwaso has lost.”
His comments come amid renewed discussions among opposition figures about forming a coalition to challenge Tinubu’s dominance in the next election.
