Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal has urged Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike to formally join the All Progressives Congress (APC) if he intends to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.
Speaking in New York during an interview with Channels Television’s Inside Sources on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Lawal said Wike could not back Tinubu while simultaneously supporting candidates from other parties through his Rainbow Coalition.
“Our message is very clear: be on one side. If you’re in APC, support APC. You can’t support APC here and other parties somewhere else. It doesn’t make sense,” Lawal stated.
He added that APC governors would raise the matter with President Tinubu, insisting Wike’s political allegiance must be clearly defined.
The dispute stems from Wike’s Rainbow Coalition, a cross-party platform mobilizing support for Tinubu’s presidential campaign while leaving room for other parties to contest governorship and legislative seats.
Wike has defended the coalition, arguing it strengthens Tinubu’s chances without undermining multiparty democracy.APC governors, however, maintain that the arrangement risks weakening the party’s candidates in down-ballot races.
The disagreement has widened into a broader debate over political structures ahead of the 2027 elections.
Lawal also dismissed Wike’s criticism of some APC governors as “lazy,” saying the minister knew who he was referring to but insisted Zamfara’s record of governance spoke for itself.
