Elder statesman Chief Dan Ulasi has declared that Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), remains the South-East’s only hope ahead of the 2027 presidential election, accusing the All Progressives Congress-led Federal Government of neglecting the region.
Ulasi made the remarks on AIT’s Kakaaki programme on Tuesday. He argued that Obi would enjoy overwhelming support across the South-East because many residents feel excluded from the current administration.
According to him, Obi could secure at least 90 per cent of the votes in the region in 2027, as voters believe the Federal Government has failed to address the South-East’s developmental needs.
“In this election coming, Peter Obi will make not less than 90% of the votes in the Southeast for personal reasons. They believe they are not part of the system. There is nothing this government has done in the South-East,” Ulasi said.
He dismissed the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, often cited by the administration as a major project, saying it has no significant impact on the five South-East states.“All we hear is the Lagos-Calabar highway that has no effect on the five components of the South-East,” he stated.
Ulasi acknowledged the efforts of governors in the region to develop their states, even those belonging to the APC, but maintained that the South-East has not benefited sufficiently from the Federal Government in terms of infrastructure and political appointments.
He said the region would use the 2027 election to express its dissatisfaction and demand greater inclusion.“The South is going to enormously vote for Peter. We have to make a point that we are part and parcel of this country,” Ulasi declared, adding that the people have a right to air their views through the political process.
