Zenith Bank customers across Nigeria have been advised to immediately check their accounts following confirmation of a recent data breach.
The warning was issued by Dr. Uju Ogunbunka, President of the Bank Consumers Association of Nigeria, in an interview with Daily Post on Wednesday.
He stressed that the incident should not be taken lightly, urging customers to carry out due diligence to ensure their deposits remain intact.
Zenith Bank had earlier disclosed that hackers gained unauthorized access to customer data. Reacting, Ogunbunka said:
“Cross-check your account to know if your deposit is intact. You can also visit the bank and ask them to provide your account balance so that you have an idea whether your own portion of the system was compromised.”
He further advised customers to log into the bank’s system, contact their account officers, and monitor for any irregularities.
Ogunbunka also called on Nigerian banks to strengthen cybersecurity measures to prevent future attacks.
The breach has heightened concerns among customers and regulators, with industry experts warning that stronger safeguards are urgently needed to protect financial data in Nigeria’s banking sector.
