The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has directed the immediate halt of using Abuja’s green areas, parks, and gardens as car dealership lots.
In a statement issued Wednesday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications, Lere Olayinka, Wike condemned the conversion of recreational spaces such as Millennium Park into car lots, stressing that such practices undermine the city’s environmental integrity.
The directive is part of broader efforts by the FCT Administration to tackle flooding in Abuja.
Wike also ordered investigations into civil servants accused of granting illegal approvals for the use of green areas, with directors in the Departments of Parks and Recreation, Environmental Protection, Traffic Management, and Urban Affairs summoned by the FCT Head of Service, Nancy Nathan.
A Task Force has been set up to enforce compliance, while the minister warned that unauthorized use of green spaces will be closely monitored.
The move follows recent demolitions of structures built on waterways after heavy rainfall caused severe flooding in parts of Abuja, including Wuse 2, Maitama, Durumi, Gaduwa, and Gudu.
Several homes, businesses, and roads were submerged, with residents blaming indiscriminate construction and blocked drainage channels.
Wike emphasized that protecting green areas is essential not only for recreation but also for flood control and environmental sustainability.
