The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun says it is reviewing the results of the 2026 governorship election across the state’s 332 wards.
BACKGROUND
Earlier on Sunday, Ademola Adeleke was re-elected for a
second term as governor of Osun.
Adeleke, the candidate of Accord, was declared the winner of
the election after an overnight results collation exercise in Osogbo, the state
capital.
Joshua Ogunwole, the state returning officer for the
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), said Adeleke secured 511,067
votes to defeat his closest challenger in the tightly contested governorship
election.
Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress (APC) came
second with a final vote tally of 444,815 votes, while Najeem Salaam, the
candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), came a distant third with
17,180 votes.
‘WE WILL EXPLORE LEGAL AVENUES’
Reacting to the development in a statement, Kola Olabisi,
spokesperson for APC in Osun, said the party would explore available legal
avenues to challenge the outcome of the
poll at the election tribunal.
Olabisi said the party is consulting its legal team before
deciding on the next step after the Independent National Electoral Commission
(INEC) declared the election results.
He said that the election process does not end with the
declaration of results, and the constitutional process allows aggrieved parties
to seek redress at the election petition tribunal, the court of appeal, and
ultimately the supreme court.
“An election cannot be said to have been concluded without
having explored all these constitutionally allowed legal opportunities to
correct anomalies observed in the process of the election as enshrined in the
Electoral Act 2026 as amended,” the statement reads.
The spokesperson said the APC would not hesitate to explore
the “window allowed by the extant Electoral Act” after consulting its lawyers
and acting on their professional advice.
He explained that the development is part of the beauty of
democracy.
“The new development is a beauty of democracy with reference
to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)’s declared governorship
election results in the state which would not propel us to deviate from
embracing the culture of the rule of law,” the statement reads.
“As a result of the foregoing, we are imploring our ever
loyal members and supporters to remain cool and calm while they carry on with
their businesses and refuse to respond to any provocative action or inaction
from any of the members of the ruling party across the state.”
Olabisi maintained that INEC’s declaration of the
governorship election results would not make the party abandon its commitment
to the rule of law, fairness and justice.
He, however, commended members and supporters of the party
for their “steadfastness, sagacity and loyalty” throughout the electoral
process.
He pointed out that their contributions had helped the APC
reach the current stage in the state’s political history.
He asked the Nigeria Police Force to protect its members and
supporters, whom he alleged were being ‘needlessly molested” by the ruling
party.
“While we are appealing to the Nigeria Police Force to come
to the aid and rescue of our members and supporters who are being needlessly
molested by the ruling party, we are assuring them that we won’t have any cause
or reason to abandon them,” Olabisi said.
“The current situation in the political history of the state
is a passing phase which will soon become part of history as justice shall be
done accordingly.”
