Two killed as IED explodes on Zamfara road

Two people have been killed after an improvised explosive device (IED) exploded along the Gurusu-Gwashi road in Bukuyyum LGA of Zamfara state.

Security sources told Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication, that the incident occurred at about 8:04am on Wednesday.

The publication said troops of the 1 Brigade deployed at Forward Operating Base (FOB) Gwashi responded to reports of the explosion.

Makama quoted security sources as saying preliminary findings indicated that a motorcycle triggered the explosive device.

“The blast resulted in the deaths of a male and a female, whose remains were recovered from the scene. The bodies were evacuated to Bukuyyum General Hospital for further necessary action,” Makama said.

“Following the incident, the troops continued to dominate the general area to prevent further attacks and deny terrorists freedom of action.”

The north-west state has recorded a spike in IDE explosions, which have killed and injured residents.

In June, three police officers were killed after an IED exploded on the Anka–Bagega road in Anka LGA of the state.
