Arise Television anchor Rufai Oseni has said the decision to unfreeze the Osun State Government account came too late, arguing that the reputational damage had already been done.
Speaking on The Morning Show on Friday, Oseni maintained that the controversy surrounding the freeze had already shaped public perception, linking the state government to corruption allegations.
“Even if the president reverses this, they’ve already achieved the aim. They’ve already blackmailed the state government,” Oseni said.
He likened the situation to former FBI Director James Comey’s handling of the Hillary Clinton email investigation ahead of the 2016 U.S. election, stressing that the reversal could not erase the narrative already entrenched in the public space.
Oseni further noted that internet search results now associate Osun State with “frozen account” and “corruption allegations,” reinforcing the perception of wrongdoing.
According to him, the episode highlights deeper issues with Nigeria’s institutions, adding that the reputational hit was the true objective of the freeze.
