President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, has suggested that the 2027 election could represent the final opportunity for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, to contest for Nigeria’s highest office.
Bwala linked Atiku’s recent pledge to reinstate the fuel subsidy to this sense of urgency. He argued that the opposition figure is resorting to populist promises because he recognises that 2027 may be his last realistic shot at the presidency.
President Tinubu scrapped the fuel subsidy on the day of his inauguration in 2023. Atiku has since vowed to reverse that decision and restore the subsidy, a stance that has generated intense debate across the country.
In a post on X, Bwala wrote: “Since 2027 is likely to be his last chance to seek the office of the president, he decided to gamble on the populist rhetoric of ‘I will bring back the fuel subsidy.’ He presumed that, after all, there is nothing to lose.
“The only problem is that, to run a populist campaign, you must first ensure that you are popular with the people.”Bwala’s remarks form part of the ongoing political exchanges ahead of the 2027 general elections.
