Presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has described the reported mass abduction and killings in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State as a national emergency requiring immediate government response.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Obi said he was deeply disturbed by accounts of attacks on communities, including Dekara, and the abduction of worshippers during Juma’at prayers.
Reports indicated that as many as 600 people, mostly women, children and the elderly may have been taken, though the exact number was still being verified.
About 30 people were also reported killed in the incidents.“This is one case too many. The fact that Nigerians can be attacked in broad daylight, in their place of worship, abducted in such numbers and taken into the forests should shake the conscience of every Nigerian and compel urgent action from government,” Obi said.
He called on the authorities to treat the situation as an emergency by deploying intelligence-led security operations to rescue all captives, secure the affected communities and dismantle the networks and enclaves enabling the attackers.
Obi linked the reported delays in the initial response to infrastructure challenges in the area, noting that the police had cited difficult terrain and a collapsed bridge.
He reiterated his long-standing call for priority attention to the repair of existing infrastructure.
Urging the government to place the safety of citizens above political considerations, he stressed that “elections will come and go, but the lives of Nigerians cannot be recovered once lost.”
The former Anambra State governor expressed solidarity with the Niger State Government, residents and the families of those abducted or killed. He called on authorities to bring the victims home and restore public confidence that government exists to protect its people.
