Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), says he would have personally gone into the forest where pupils and teachers abducted in Oriire, Oyo state, were held if he were president.
BACKROUND
On May 15, gunmen attacked Baptist Nursery and Primary
School, Yawota; Community Grammar School, Esiele; and LA Primary School in
Ogbomoso, all in Oriire LGA of Oyo.
The Oyo police command said two people were killed during
the attacks on the schools. At least 45 schoolchildren and teachers were
reportedly kidnapped during the incident.
The incident prompted the Oyo state government to shut
schools in four LGAs as security agencies intensified rescue efforts.
On July 10, the presidency announced that the abducted
schoolchildren and teachers had regained their freedom.
‘EVERYTHING IS SHROUDED IN SECRECY IN NIGERIA’
Speaking on Thursday during an interview on Afia TV, Obi
said the leadership is essential to tackling insecurity, insisting that he
would not have waited for weeks before taking action if the abduction had
occurred under his watch.
The former governor of Anambra said everyone in the camp
would have been rescued, even if the operation resulted in casualties.
Obi also criticised President Bola Tinubu over his failure
to personally reach out to Seyi Makinde, governor of Oyo, during the more than
50-day ordeal.
“Days of kidnap of Oyo children. The president did not call
the governor. What do you mean? Fifty days,” he said.
“But I’ll be there in two days. Is the bush not in Nigeria?
That bush they went in. The bush is in Nigeria.
“Everybody in that bush will come out. There might be
casualties, but everybody will come out.
“And it is time when we say we resolve something. We arrest
some people. Parade the people. Let people see them. What is happening?
“When America or other countries kill people like that, they
parade them. They show it. Everybody sees it.
“In Nigeria, everything is shrouded in secrecy.”
