Over 200 KASU Lecturers Quit, ASUU Issues Strike Ultimatum

More than 200 lecturers, including professors, have resigned from Kaduna State University (KASU) due to poor working conditions and the university’s failure to implement the 2025 Federal Government–ASUU Agreement, according to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), KASU chapter.

ASUU-KASU chairman, Abubakar Abdullahi, disclosed this at a press conference, warning that the union has given the university authorities a two-week ultimatum to fully implement the agreement or face a total, indefinite strike.

The agreement, which took effect in January 2026, was designed to improve welfare and service conditions for academic staff nationwide.

While most federal and several state universities have begun implementation or announced timelines, KASU has yet to act.

Abdullahi noted that repeated letters and appeals to the university management, Governing Council, and the Kaduna State Governor have gone unanswered.

He stressed that the delay has left KASU lecturers among the lowest-paid in Nigeria, eroding the institution’s reputation for prioritizing staff welfare.

The union warned that the continued exodus of experienced academics could cripple the university for years. At its Congress meeting on August 12, ASUU-KASU resolved to declare an industrial dispute, aligning with the National Executive Council’s resolution earlier this month at the University of Abuja.

Beyond the federal agreement, ASUU-KASU listed unresolved local issues such as university autonomy, excessive workload, promotion arrears, death benefits, group life insurance, wage awards, and pension remittances.

The union urged authorities to act swiftly to avert disruption, while appealing to parents, stakeholders, and Nigerians to intervene to preserve peace and stability at the institution.
