Phrank Shaibu, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication to African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, has accused former President Olusegun Obasanjo of repeatedly attacking Atiku whenever a presidential election approaches.
Speaking in an interview with Daily Post on Sunday, Shaibu was responding to Obasanjo’s latest remarks, in which the former president described choosing Atiku as his vice president as the biggest mistake of his political career.
Shaibu said Obasanjo regularly dusts off old grievances and repackages personal bitterness as national interest against Atiku during election seasons.
He argued that history cannot be rewritten through resentment and that personal vendettas cannot replace the truth.
“The pattern you have identified is one that Nigerians can also see. It is difficult to ignore the fact that, as every major election approaches, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo resurfaces with fresh attacks against Atiku Abubakar,” Shaibu said.
He noted that Obasanjo had previously acknowledged Atiku’s contribution to their re-election victory and invited him to stand beside him during his acceptance speech, facts that cannot be erased by later statements or books.
Shaibu questioned why Obasanjo would have “repeated the mistake” by running with Atiku a second time if he truly regarded the choice as his greatest error.
He described Obasanjo’s book as a political weapon forged in bitterness rather than a contribution to history, used at every election cycle against those he wishes to stop.
Shaibu further urged Obasanjo to address issues within his own family before presenting himself as a moral authority, referencing past public criticisms by the former president’s daughter, Senator Iyabo Obasanjo.
“Nigerians have seen this movie before. As elections approach, Chief Obasanjo dusts off old grievances, repackages personal bitterness as national interest, and hopes to shape the political landscape,” he said.
“His latest remarks and his book say far more about his inability to let go of the past than they do about the man he seeks to diminish. Nigerians are wiser today.
They will judge Atiku Abubakar by his records, his ideas, and his capacity to solve the country’s problems not by recurring election-season interventions or revisionist narratives.”
