Nigerian Govt Still Paying Subsidies — Sowore

The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has accused the Federal Government of continuing to pay fuel subsidies in secret, despite publicly claiming to have removed them.

Speaking on Arise Television’s Morning Show on Tuesday, Sowore argued that subsidies were not limited to petrol but also extended to the naira, which he claimed was being quietly maintained at a certain exchange rate against the dollar.

“In the first place, they are still paying subsidies. They just changed the name of what they call it. They’re also subsidizing naira. That’s one thing they will never tell you,” he said.

The human rights activist criticised the government for favouring the wealthy through waivers and customs concessions, while ordinary Nigerians bore the brunt of economic hardship. He noted that the removal of subsidies had worsened poverty and triggered a sharp decline in the value of the naira.

Sowore insisted that subsidies were not inherently bad, pointing out that many countries subsidise their poor. However, he maintained that in Nigeria, the rich benefit disproportionately. “Go and look at their waivers, their customs, you will know who is getting rich subsidies compared to the people who are getting 10 naira from each gallon of petrol that was taken away from them,” he said.

He concluded that the government must stop “lying about subsidies” and confront the economic realities facing Nigerians.
