The Regional Chairman of the Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN) in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, Rev. Ezekiel Dachomo, has rejected claims by Islamic cleric Sheikh Sani Yahaya Jingir that Nigeria is a Muslim country.
Jingir, a Jos-based scholar, made the remarks during a programme in Kano State over the weekend.
He expressed support for continuing a Muslim-Muslim political arrangement, arguing that Muslims form the majority and should therefore have the opportunity to lead the country.
He also referred to Christians as infidels and suggested they were free to leave Nigeria if they were unhappy with such an arrangement.
In a statement on Tuesday, Rev. Dachomo insisted that Nigeria is not, and can never be, a Muslim country.
He strongly opposed Jingir’s comments and cautioned the Sheikh against statements that could deepen religious divisions or fuel hostility between Muslims and Christians.
Dachomo argued that political leadership in Nigeria should not be decided by claims of religious numerical superiority.
Instead, he said, it should be based on competence, justice, good governance, and the capacity of leaders to protect the lives and property of all citizens.
“Nigeria is a multi-religious country in which Muslims and Christians have historically participated in the political process and contributed to the development of the nation,” he stated.
He further urged religious leaders to be careful with their public statements, especially on political matters that could affect relations between different religious communities.
