Nigeria Deploys Troops to Guinea-Bissau for ECOWAS Peace Mission

The Nigerian Army has deployed 86 personnel to Guinea-Bissau as part of the ECOWAS Stabilisation Support Mission, reaffirming the country’s commitment to regional peace and security.

The troops, serving under NIGCOY 5 ESSMGB, departed Abuja aboard a Nigerian Air Force C-130 Hercules aircraft and have now arrived in Guinea-Bissau to begin their assignment under the ECOWAS mandate.

In a statement, the Army said the deployment highlights Nigeria’s longstanding role as a leading contributor to peacekeeping efforts across Africa.

Before departure, Major General MLD Saraso, represented by Brigadier General MM Idris, charged the troops to uphold professionalism, discipline, and operational excellence.

He urged them to act as exemplary ambassadors of Nigeria, respect the host nation’s laws and customs, and maintain zero tolerance for sexual exploitation, substance abuse, indiscipline, and misuse of social media.

“The deployment further underscores the Nigerian Army’s enduring reputation as one of Africa’s foremost contributors to regional and international peace support operations,” the statement read.

The Army noted that Nigeria’s decades of involvement in peacekeeping under ECOWAS, the African Union, and the United Nations have strengthened its leadership in conflict prevention, peacebuilding, and post-conflict recovery.

The professionalism and dedication of Nigerian personnel, it added, continue to make the Army a trusted force for regional stability.
