The Zamfara State chapter of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has raised the alarm over reports that suspected bandits planted an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) along the Gurusu-Gwashi Road in Bukkuyum Local Government Area.
In a statement by Publicity Secretary Alkasimu Mustapha Kayatawa, the party described the development as a dangerous escalation of insecurity that could put thousands of residents, motorists, farmers, traders, commuters and security personnel at serious risk.
“The reported use of IEDs on public roads represents a dangerous escalation that must not be allowed to become a new pattern of criminality in Zamfara,” the NDC said.
It urged the Federal Government and security agencies to take immediate steps to secure the corridor and other vulnerable communities.
The party called for an urgent review of security operations in Bukkuyum and surrounding areas, increased patrols, stronger intelligence gathering, improved explosive-ordnance capabilities, and greater security presence along major highways, rural roads and communities.
It stressed that intelligence-led operations are essential to identify criminal networks and prevent attacks.
The NDC also questioned the scale of security deployment in Zamfara compared with the heavy presence seen during the recent Osun governorship election, arguing that protecting lives, homes, farms and highways should receive the same urgency as securing ballot boxes.
“The people of Zamfara should not be made to feel that securing ballot boxes attracts greater national urgency than securing their lives, homes, farms and highways,” the statement said.
It specifically urged reinforcement of operations along the Gurusu-Gwashi corridor to stop criminal groups from turning explosive devices into a regular tactic against civilians.
The party appealed to the Zamfara State Government to deepen cooperation with federal security agencies and strengthen community-based intelligence networks, noting that residents, traditional institutions and community leaders are often the first to notice suspicious activity.
Highlighting the broader toll of banditry, the NDC said the state has already suffered too many deaths, ransom payments and displacements.
“Zamfara has buried too many innocent citizens. Too many families have paid ransoms. Too many communities have been displaced,” it stated, adding: “Our roads must not now become minefields.”
It called on the Federal Government, security agencies and the state government to treat the reported incident as an urgent warning and to pursue sustained, intelligence-driven operations rather than temporary deployments, in partnership with local communities, to protect residents and restore lasting peace.
