Messi Mourns Father, Questions Future in FootballLionel Messi has paid an emotional tribute to his late father, Jorge Messi, admitting he is uncertain about continuing his football career without him.
The Argentina captain shared the heartfelt message on Instagram, alongside a photo of them together, writing:
“Dad, I still can’t believe you’re gone. It hasn’t sunk in or rather, I don’t want it to sink in. It’s so hard to imagine that I won’t see you anymore, that we won’t talk anymore.”
Messi revealed that Jorge, who had long been his agent and closest confidant, had urged him to play at the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite his deteriorating health.
The forward recalled waiting for his father’s messages after matches, only to be reminded of his worsening condition.
Argentina reached the final, but Messi said he struggled physically and was unable to deliver the trophy he had hoped to show his father.
“We made it to the final and you couldn’t be there. I wanted to win it so I could bring it to you and show you a new trophy. I couldn’t do it, my legs just couldn’t give any more,” he wrote.
Messi described Jorge not only as a parent but also as a friend and mentor, noting his influence will continue in how he raises his own children.
The 38-year-old concluded his tribute with gratitude:“Rest in peace and watch over us from above, just as you did here. Thank you for everything. I love you, Dad.”
Jorge Messi, 68, played a pivotal role in his son’s career, from securing medical treatment for growth hormone deficiency to overseeing his move to Barcelona at age 13.
His passing leaves Messi grappling with grief and uncertainty about whether he will keep playing football much longer.
