The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State has mocked Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) following the resignation of Senator Saliu Mustapha, who represents Kwara Central.
In a statement on Friday, PDP spokesperson Olusegun Adewara described Mustapha’s departure as proof of deepening crisis and leadership failure within the APC.
Mustapha, a founding member of the party and key figure in the 2013 merger that birthed the APC, announced his resignation in a letter dated August 14, citing recent developments in the state chapter.
Adewara said the exit of such a prominent senator exposed the APC’s internal divisions, likening the party to “a runaway car heading to doom.”
He accused Governor AbdulRazaq of failing to unite party leaders and treating political competitors as threats.
“The resignation of Senator Saliu Mustapha is not an ordinary political development; it is a loud confirmation that the leadership crisis in the APC has reached a dangerous and irreversible stage,” Adewara stated.
The PDP also referenced the recent resignation of Ambassador Kolo Jiya and other APC leaders in Kwara North, saying it showed stakeholders had lost confidence in AbdulRazaq’s leadership.
The party urged remaining APC members to follow Mustapha’s example and defect.Meanwhile, Mustapha explained that his decision followed weeks of consultations with stakeholders and constituents.
He said politics must be about “people, principles and purpose,” adding that his resignation would not affect his commitment to serving Kwara Central.
“To my constituents, supporters, political associates and stakeholders, I assure you that while my political platform may change, my principles, my purpose and my commitment to the people remain unchanged,” he said.
The APC has yet to issue an official response to the senator’s resignation, while efforts to reach Governor AbdulRazaq for comment were unsuccessful.
