Kenneth Okonkwo, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has criticised President Bola Tinubu’s directive to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to unfreeze Osun State’s bank accounts, describing it as evidence of the administration’s interference in Nigeria’s anti-corruption agencies.
Okonkwo, a constitutional lawyer, argued that the president’s order was “morally understandable but legally untenable,” insisting it exposed the EFCC and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) as lacking independence under Tinubu’s government.
Posting on X, he wrote: “Even though the order from President Tinubu to the EFCC to unfreeze the Osun State account might seem morally reasonable, it is not legally correct.
"The directive has shown the world what every Nigerian already knows, that Tinubu repeatedly uses corruption and independent agencies to unfairly target and harass his political opponents."
He further claimed that Tinubu’s admission of not being aware of the EFCC’s initial action reinforced concerns raised by religious leaders about the president’s inner circle presenting a distorted picture of Nigeria’s realities.
Okonkwo accused Tinubu of interfering in multiple federal institutions, citing his comments on INEC’s neutrality, directives to ICPC regarding investigations, and now the EFCC’s reversal of Osun’s account freeze. “Rule of law is castrated under Tinubu.
In 2027, Nigeria should experience a significant change,” he declared.The ADC stalwart urged Nigerians to remain vigilant, warning that only “eternal vigilance” could prevent further erosion of institutional independence.
