The controversy over the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) governorship ticket in Bauchi State appears resolved after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) published the name of Senator Shehu Buba Umar as the party’s candidate.
INEC listed Buba as the PRP’s flagbearer for the 2027 Bauchi State governorship election. The commission also released the particulars of his running mate and the party’s candidates for the State House of Assembly.
The publication followed Section 29(3) of the 2026 Electoral Act and is expected to settle questions that had arisen about the legitimacy of the PRP’s governorship ticket and its other candidates in the state.
The dispute began shortly after Senator Buba defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the PRP.
A governorship aspirant of the party, Safiyanu Gambo, had approached the court to challenge Buba’s emergence as the PRP candidate.
Reacting to the development, Buba welcomed the publication, describing it as a major relief for the party and its supporters.
He said it had removed the uncertainty surrounding the candidates presented by the PRP for the 2027 elections.
“Praise be to Allah. The issue surrounding the authenticity of my candidature, that of my deputy and the PRP candidates for the State House of Assembly has now been put to rest,” he stated.
The PRP candidate urged party members and supporters to close ranks and focus on issues affecting residents of Bauchi State.
He said the party would pursue issue-based campaigns and uphold democratic principles while presenting itself as an alternative to the existing political options in the state.
Buba also pledged that, if elected, his administration would prioritise a development agenda centred on the needs and welfare of the people.
